The Future of EV Battery Recycling in Rural BC -- Jacomien van Tonder, Metal Tech Alley

Speaker picJacomien van Tonder is the Project Coordinator for Metal Tech Alley, a successful regional marketing strategy from the Lower Columbia Initiatives Corporation (LCIC) based in Trail BC. After 4 years running the Metal Tech Alley program, the LCIC is considered a leader in economic development best practices through creating a circular economy hub in small rural area. The considerable success of Metal Tech Alley rests on embracing industry of all sectors and supporting innovation for companies that are engaging with circular practices and doughnut economics.

Jacomien was born in South Africa and emigrated to Canada 12 years ago. She got a Baccalaureus Procurationis degree and practiced as a lawyer and CEO of a Top 500 South African Company. Since moving to Canada, she has branched out to take her career in new direction to include Economic Development and Project Management.


Recycling Solar Panels -- AJ Orben, We Recycle Solar
Speaker picAJ Orben is Vice President at We Recycle Solar, and innovating lifecycle management for the solar industry. We Recycle Solar is the dedicated, single-source disposal provider for excess, damaged, and end-of-life solar equipment. AJ oversees sales and marketing, and the strategic direction of the company.

AJ's career is centered around promoting a circular economy, extending the useful life of devices, and minimizing waste. He has a diverse background built upon electronics and metals recycling, and reverse logistics. Prior to We Recycle Solar, he managed global business development for the 4th largest ITAD provider, and helped manufacturers and retailers establish national consumer take-back programs.

Speaker picMaster’s degree in chemical engineering. Did a brief stint of basic research on the structure of water, before changing into “Real life problems” Spent 10 years as a consultant on wastewater handling, oil and gas production and geothermal energy. Working with corrosion, materials- and water-chemistry.

Manage to decarbonize my resume by joining Vestas in early 2020. Currently focusing on technical, commercial and environmental aspects of technologies for composite recycling; Cutting, Shredding, milling, pyrolysis, solvolysis and co-processing.
