And so, My Low Waste Journey Begins ...

Welcome to Less is More, where sustainability meets everyday life in Saskatchewan. I'm Jana Ham, your guide on this journey. I joined the Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council as a Blog Writer and am excited to be part of a passionate team committed to educating and inspiring the people of Saskatchewan to reduce waste.
About Me
My name is Jana Ham. I am 26 years old, grew up on an acreage in White City, and moved to a condo in Saskatoon in 2022. Inspired by my mom, low-waste living was a normal part of growing up on the acreage. We composted our food scraps, rototilled grass clippings and leaves into the garden, and I still remember driving to the town blue bin in the baseball diamond parking lot to drop off our cardboard boxes, milk jugs, and plastic containers.
My mom was also an avid DIYer whose low waste practices included canning tomatoes, pickling carrots, making jams and jellies, mixing up her own laundry detergent, making home-made deodorant, and much more.
The transition from my parents’ acreage to the Saskatoon condo has challenged me to rethink my approach to sustainability. Without a backyard garden or curbside compost bin (yes, even in 2025, there is no compost pickup at my condo), I've had to get creative to maintain the low waste practices I grew up with.
And that brings us to the blog, Less is More: A Saskatchewanian’s Low Waste Journey.
About the Blog
Less is More isn't just about my personal journey—it's a resource for fellow Saskatchewanians looking to embrace sustainability in practical ways. Here, I'll share my experiences, tips, and discoveries as I strive to reduce waste. Whether you're curious about composting in an apartment or navigating recycling programs in our province, I'll cover it all.
What to Expect
Every month, I'll dive into topics that matter to anyone striving for a greener lifestyle:
- Creative ways to reduce waste -- from DIY projects to upcycling ideas, I'll explore innovative ways to minimize our environmental footprint.
- Recycling programs in Saskatchewan -- navigating recycling can be confusing, so I'll break down local programs, best practices, and how to recycle effectively.
- Sharing my research on low-waste living – I’ll share interesting finds as I learn more about what other countries, cities, and individuals are doing to lead a low-waste life.
- Spotlighting local waste reduction heroes – highlighting the great progress we are making in Saskatchewan to inspire waste reduction and who’s behind it.
Through Less is More, I hope to inspire and inform, showing that in both urban and rural environments, sustainable living is not only possible, but rewarding.
Join me on this journey towards a simpler, more mindful way of life—one that proves that less truly is more.
