SWRC Blog: Waste Reduction Week 2019 - the Repair Cafe Edition

What a fun Waste Reduction Week – This year we decided to focus our efforts on tangible waste reduction at Repair Cafes.

The SWRC assisted in coordinating nine different cafes around the province in:

SaskatoonWarman jacket
Regina
Swift Current
North Battleford
Yorkton
Martensville
Warman
Moose Jaw
Prince Albert

In all, 315 items were brought into the cafes. Of course, not all of them were repairable, but in many cases people left with the knowledge of the parts that would be needed, or that the item was beyond repair.

While the number of items repaired is one measure of success for the events, what was more exciting was people’s appreciation of the events as a whole. Most people who volunteered at the cafes said they would definitely do it again. People who brought in items were happy to have things fixed, but also wanted to know when the next one would be, so they could share the experience with more people.

The council is very appreciative of our presenting sponsor for the events Affinity Credit Union. ACU staff helped at the cafes in Saskatoon and Regina.

Most importantly, we are getting requests from community groups who are interested in hosting their own Repair Cafes.  We are very excited to see the act of repair being brought back into the light.
