SWRC Update: Compost Field Day

SWRC’s annual Compost Field Day is being held in North Battleford on May 29. This is an event for those interested in starting or refining a community-scale compost program. Roland Rusnell has been running Saskatoon’s depot compost operation for more than a decade. He’s been a key resource for us and his experience spans various composting techniques and sizes of operations. Roland will lay out the basics and will be able to answer all the questions.
The Ministry of Environment is starting to consider composting operations and is working on a Guidance Document (that we’re hoping will be released by the Field Day). This will be helpful for everyone in the field, knowing what the rules are and how to apply them. The Ministry is also talking about the intersection of composting and Dutch Elm Disease, since the province has specific exceptions around elm wood.
A highlights of Field Days is, well, the Field. We will tour North Batteford’s compost site and see a couple of compost techniques in action.
