Coming up October 15-21, 2018 is our very own week: Waste Reduction Week in Canada (WRW). Each year the national WRW organization provides theme days. This year we have organized local events to coordinate with the seven theme days of WRW. You can see them all on our events page here. Here's some of what we have planned, and we hope you can join us.
If you are in Regina on Oct 15th, join us for our public launch event: a free screening of the documentary WASTED: The Story of Food Waste, narrated by Anthony Bourdain. We'll have free popcorn, food waste inspired cocktails for purchase and a few opening words from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment and the City of Regina. All the fun starts when the doors open at 6pm, so be sure to join us at the Artesian on 13th st. Let us know you are planning to come through our Facebook event.
On Saturday Oct 20th, the SWRC will be putting on Saskatoon's first Repair Cafe. We are fortunate to be working with excellent partners such as the Saskatoon Makerspace, The Library of Things, Bridge City Bicycle Coop and London Drugs. From 10am to 4pm at the Saskatoon Makerspace, all are welcome to bring in household items that they would like to repair. The Makerspace offers an impressive array of tools and experts for repair such as woodworking, 3D printing, sewing and small electronics.
We're excited to see what people bring in, and what can be repaired instead of thrown away. For any electrical items that can not be repaired, London Drugs has agreed to take them for recycling.
During the week, we will also be opening nominations for the SWRC's 2018 Waste Minimization Awards. Starting Wednesday Oct 17th you will be able to nominate an outstanding leader in waste reduction. All the info you need will be in our nominations page.
Another first this year is a car seat recycling pilot program. Working with ATMO we will be launching car seat collection during WRW on October 18th. We will be taking a limited number of seats over four weeks. We hope to learn from this event and make car seat recycling more accessible in Saskatchewan. If you would like more details, or know someone else who would, make sure to sign up to our special car seat recycling email list here.
Waste Reduction Week in Canada began in 2001 and is in its 17th year. You can check out events across Canada as well as more about the seven theme days at the national Waste Reduction in Canada website. If you are holding an event, be sure to post it there.
