SWRC Update: A Week to Focus on Waste Reduction
For over two decades now, groups across Canada have been celebrating Waste Reduction Week (WRW) in the third week of October. This year it will be October 15-21.
While we believe every week should be Waste Reduction Week, WRW does provide an opportunity to bring attention to the issue. It’s a good time to encourage your people (clients, employees, residents, friends, relatives) to think about making a few changes – maybe adding a waste-reducing habit or learning to recycle correctly.
It’s also a good time to let the world know about the great things you are already doing. Are you starting something new? Have you reached a milestone? Maybe you’ve achieved zero waste? WRW is your week to shine a spotlight on those accomplishments.
Even though October is months away, now is the time to plan how you might participate in WRW. SWRC’s plans so far include:
- A Rubbish food-waste dinner in Lloydminster
- Launch events for WRW in Saskatoon & Regina
- Organizing a Repair Café in Saskatoon (Regina and Prince Albert already have these)
- Coordinating car seat recycling collection events in Saskatoon & Regina
The national website for Waste Reduction Week is a great source for ideas on events you can hold in your own community. See their events section for ideas as well as how to register and promote your event.
