2011 Waste Reduction Week Contests

1) Ease My Load Campaign

Meet Atlas -- the Waste Reduction Week in Canada mascot. For thousands of years, Atlas has been happy to carry the burdens of the earth on his shoulders, but the amount of waste we produce makes his job even harder. Waste Reduction Week wants to help Atlas, and you can too. Join the Ease My Load campaign! We are asking Canadians to show us how you are easing Atlas's load.

Download a cut-out of Atlas from www.wrwcanada.com or below, and include him in your waste reduction activities. Take a digital picture or video, and upload it to our website. We will share pictures and videos with Canada and the world. In addition, WRW will be tracking the amount of waste that is being diverted through the activities showcased in the submitted photos and videos on their online “No Waste Meter”.

See www.wrwcanada.com for more details on the Ease My Load campaign.

Who is eligible? Any Canadian resident.
How do I enter? Download the image of Atlas, and cut him out. Take a photo or video that includes Atlas, and demonstrates your participation in a waste-reducing activity. Upload the image or video to www.wrwcanada.com to enter.

2) Recycle My Cell Campaign

The Recycle My Cell national cell phone recycling program ensures our old and out-of-use cell phones, smart phones, PDAs, pagers and their batteries are properly recycled. On October 17, 2011, Waste Reduction Week in Canada will launch the Recycle My Cell Challenge, a contest for schools and post-secondary schools to recycle old wireless devices and accessories. Interested schools can apply online, and they will receive everything they need to set up a Recycle My Cell collection site. At the end of the challenge (November 17th), schools need only seal their boxes and call the courier for pick-up. The Saskatchewan school with the most recycled products (based on the number of phones collected per student) will be the Recycle My Cell Challenge winner. There is no need to stop after the contest is over, Recycle My Cell activities can continue all year long.

Who is eligible? Any Saskatchewan school or Saskatchewan post secondary institute.

When does the contest run? October 17th - November 17th, 2011.

How do I enter? Register for a collection box at www.wrwcanada.com (or click on the image to right). You will receive an RMC box, as well as a postage-paid mailing label. Simply set up one of the RMC recovery boxes in a convenient location at your site, display some Waste Reduction Week posters. You are now ready to have people place their mobile phones and accessories in the recovery box! At the end of the contest period, November 17, 2011, you will send in your box.

This year there are two options for submitting your collection boxes for the Recycle My Cell challenge:

  • Drop off your Recycle My Cell Collection Box at any Canada Post Location,
  • Or Call:   1-888-550-6333    for pick up.

To be eligible for prizes, entries must be received by Dec. 8, 2011.

What do we win? The winning school receives $500 for their school to use for green initiatives, plus a new electronic device that can be awarded by the school to a student who has shown outstanding leadership in environmental protection.

What happens after I enter? All boxes entered in the contest will have their items recorded by Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association. Each participating school that returns a box with qualifying recyclable products will be entered to win a provincial prize. Winners will be announced In January 2012.
