Can a box save the planet?

The Life Box Co., Olympia, Wash, claims to have a box that can help save the planet.

The Life Box is a corrugated box that has tree seeds and mycorrhizal fungi seeds implanted into the board. Ideally, after the box is used for shipping, the consumer tears up the board, plants it, and tree seedlings emerge. The Life Box is manufactured in the US using recycled board and soy-based inks.

The Life Box does not increase the cost of shipping, as the increase in weight is negligible, and the tree mix has been approved by the Departments of Agriculture for planting in every state in the continental US (not Hawaii), and Canada.

The company expects to expand the concept into a suite of products carrying seeds of garden vegetables, native grasses, and could be customized according to zip code destinations. See lifeboxcompany.com.
