Convention Centres Offer Green Events

Event Greening is a central concept at the Metro Toronto Convention Center (MTCC). In 2007, MTCC hosted its first Zero Waste event. Since then, the facility has hosted hundreds of events that feature waste prevention. Through a partnership with Turtle Island Recycling, the MTCC's zero waste events boast 97% waste diversion. (See also our earlier article on the MTCC Zero Waste Events.)

Their success is based on a multi-level strategy that involves stakeholders, retailers and employees. Initiatives include using plastic cups instead of Styrofoam, staff training in zero waste policies, a special logo and slogan, convenient three-bin disposal bins (that don't include an option for garbage).

The MTCC building itself is an example of green technologies at work. It boasts a 300,000 square foot green roof which is open to the public and is the first convention center in Canada to use green electricity. The building as a whole recycles 81% of all waste generated. Additionally, the MTCC donates over 6,000 pounds of food annually to local food banks.

Locally, TCU place in Saskatoon has begun to explore environmental initiatives and host green events. To date, they have held three green events (no zero waste events yet) and as patron interest in green events grows, TCU anticipates hosting more.

Much like the MTCC, green events at TCU are characterized by the use of compostable containers (when non-reusable dishes are requested), reduced paper use, bulk containers for cream and sugar, environmentally friendly chafer fuel, ice stations rather than bottled water, beverages in bulk/tetra-paks/glass bottles (which are recycled) and reduction of food waste by separating out compostables. Education of staff about the green initiatives is an integral aspect of these events.

Every event held at TCU features visible recycling containers for paper, glass and plastic; reusable glassware and dinnerware (unless otherwise requested), as well as reusable napkins and tablecloths.

As an organization, TCU recycles office paper, ink cartridges and batteries. The building has low flow water features (and the replacement of older models), and motion sensors on lights to cut down on lighting in un-used areas.

We hope to have more stories of green conventions from Saskatchewan in the future.
