London Drugs' Green Deal

by Naomi Mihilewicz

Alright, so I admit at first I wasn't a big fan of London Drugs when they opened up in Saskatoon. I worked in a family-owned camera store, and London Drugs was feared for its inexpensive photofinishing and cameras. Well, the family wound up putting their business out of business themselves, and London Drugs has gone on to do some impressive environmental things.

London Drugs calls their environmental business philosophy the 'Green Deal.' They have quite the variety of green corporate initiatives. If you visit the website www.greendeal.ca you'll see what I mean. Customers will really appreciate their packaging recycling service. You can bring back or leave any packaging from an item purchased at London Drugs - even Styrofoam!

With electronics and small appliances, the 'deal' is even better. Let's say you need to replace a broken appliance, like a blender. When you buy a new blender from London Drugs, you can return all the packaging AND the old blender for recycling! That's right, they even recycle unusable electronics. You can still take advantage of that service even if you are not buying a replacement from them, you just have to pay a small recycling fee. They even take one of the most commonly asked about items - microwaves - for a $10 fee.

Where do they send their Styrofoam and electronics for recycling, you ask? To Genesis Recycling in B.C. You can watch videos about the recycling processes they use on the main page of the Green Deal website. Styrofoam, or more generically, expanded polystyrene, is extruded back into plastic 'pucks' which are then used to manufacture new plastic products. One example, according to Genesis Recycling, is solar outdoor garden lights. Electronics are disassembled and recycled for their materials.

London Drugs also makes an effort to provide greener products for their consumers, including everything from compostable diapers to 100% recycled bathroom tissue. They sell fair trade food items as well.
