Vermicompost Goes to Walmart

Created by Thomas Szaky, a 23-year- old Canadian, TerraCycle Inc. is a new company with an environmentally friendly product and big plans. Thomas was attending Princeton University when vermicomposting (composting with red wiggler worms) caught his attention. It started as ‘The Worm Project’, an initiative focused on processing campus food waste with worms, and has developed into a major production and marketing initiative.

TerraCycle markets a ready-to-use liquid fertilizer for indoor plants and a product for use in hydroponic greenhouse production. The indoor plant food is marketed in reused PET plastic bottles. Walmart Canada has agreed to stock the product in all its stores. Loblaws and Zellers are also planning to carry the product. For more information about the plant food and TerraCycle’s research and development look under ‘product’ at their web site www.terracycle.net.
