We’re in the process of planning our next Waste ReForum conference together our good friends at SWANA Northern Lights. It’s a little later than normal, May 17-19, and is being held at the Radisson Hotel in Saskatoon.
The conference theme is CoCreate, and speaks to working together on developing solutions, involving everyone at the beginning and moving away from the “here’s what we’ve decided, what do you think” model.
The conference is also looking at the concept of circular economy and how it can be applied. We’re very excited to be hearing from our opening keynote speaker, Jonathon Periera from Plant Chicago. Situated in a refurbished meat packing plant, the Plant is a community of food businesses that are deliberately designing their interactions to create a circular economy. They have a bakery and a brewery, a hydroponic vegetable operation, a mushroom grower, a fish farm and lots more. The Plant’s culture includes looking for ways to reduce and repurpose waste and keep resources flowing. We’re looking forward to Jonathon’s stories!
Our closing keynote speaker, Chief Darcy Bear, will also be fascinating. Whitecap Dakota First Nation’s journey to self-governance applied many of the principles of CoCreation. Some of the outcomes from this journey include $100 million in investment in the community and an unemployment reduction from 70 percent to five percent. There will be much we can learn from this highly respected local leader.
Registration for the conference will open in early 2017. We hope to see you there.
