Saskatchewan Waste Minimization Awards
These Awards are intended to promote and encourage
all sectors of the province to undertake
waste reduction activities. We hope not only to provide well deserved
recognition, but also to highlight success stories for others to consider
adopting.
Categories
Individual Adult Open to individuals 18 and over who lived in Saskatchewan for at least
nine months in 2009. This award recognizes an individual whose initiative
and determination have had a measurable impact in reducing waste and promoting
the conserver ethic in the community, workplace or in government.
Youth/School Open to individuals under age 18 who have lived in Saskatchewan for at
least nine months in 2009, or their schools. This award recognizes individuals
or groups who have demonstrated exemplary commitment and leadership by
involving peers, schools, neighbours, or communities in waste reduction
and conservation efforts.
Corporate Leadership Open to all corporate entities (not municipalities or charitable organizations),
including crown corporations, who conducted business in Saskatchewan in
2009. This award will be judged on the basis of percentage of waste
diverted in 2009, the environmental benefits of this diversion, and the
sustainability of the program. Special consideration will be given
to organizations that have developed employee environmental awareness programs
to promote the 3Rs off the job as well as at work, or have actively shared
their 3Rs initiatives with other organizations.
Non-profit Organization
Open to all non-profit or grass-roots groups operating in Saskatchewan
who have 3Rs initiatives. This award will be judged on the
basis of percentage of waste diverted in 2009, the environmental
benefits of this diversion, and program stability. Special consideration
will be given to organizations whose initiatives have a high degree
of community involvement, make a significant impact on government
policy-making and will have a lasting effect.
Municipality Open to
all Saskatchewan municipalities. This award will be judged
on the basis of percentage of waste diverted in 2009, the environmental
benefits of this diversion, and program stability. Special consideration
will be given to established programs which demonstrate measurable
waste reduction or diversion and innovative public education programs.
Partnerships Open to partnerships involving two or more parties from among eligible
Saskatchewan municipal, corporate and/or non-profit organizations. This
award recognizes projects or programs which demonstrate the benefits of
co-operation. Special consideration will be given to initiatives
in which the partners have created sustainable ways to obtain mutual benefits
through waste reduction, reuse or recycling.
Judging
Judging will be done by the SWRC Awards Committee. Judging will
follow the hierarchy of the 3Rs: first priority will be given to
waste reduction at source, including composting; then to reuse; and finally
to recycling. There may not be an award presented in every category
every year.
